Implant Planning and Long-term Care

How placement is planned and what maintenance actually involves.

About

Most implant failures are maintenance failures

Written and reviewed by Dr. Seongpil Cho, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist.

The fixture itself rarely fails once it has integrated. What fails is the tissue around it: peri-implantitis destroys the supporting bone, and because an implant has no periodontal ligament it produces very little pain while doing so.

That is why the recall schedule matters more than the brand of fixture. Radiographs taken under the same conditions let us compare bone level over time and catch loss while it is still small.

01

Planning

Position is derived from the finished restoration, not from where bone is easiest to drill.

02

Cleaning

Interdental brushes and an irrigator reach what a toothbrush cannot.

03

Recall

Three-monthly for the first year, then every three to six months.
