Not every wisdom tooth has to come out
If the tooth is upright, meets the opposing tooth and can be reached with a brush, it can be kept and monitored. Removal is considered when the gum around it swells repeatedly or the tooth in front is being damaged.
For lower wisdom teeth we check the distance to the inferior alveolar nerve on a CT scan before deciding how to approach the extraction.
Removal
Local anaesthetic, with the tooth sectioned if that reduces bone removal.
Recovery
Swelling peaks at two to three days and settles within about a week.
